Maine Lobstermen - Lincolnville Harbor. Captain Mike Hutchings is a lobsterman, harbor master, and purveyor of fine Maine lobster to local restaurants, markets and distributors. I spent a day on the water with him and his sternman Ken Weed. Their day usually begins at 4AM and ends often at 7PM. After loading the herring bait on the "Fundy Spray" and setting up, we pull up anchor and depart around 5:30 to begin checking the 800 traps that Capt. Mike owns. The traps are hauled on a rotation basis to make sure they are all checked within one week. Ken and the Capt. work like silent dancers on the deck with little said and each motion carefully choreographed to accomplish the goal of snagging and lifting the trap with the electronic wench, checking the trap for lobsters, sizing the catch, banding the claws, replacing fresh bait in the mesh bag and getting the lobsters in the salt water holding tank. The trap is then slid down the rails on the starboard side back into Penobscot Bay. The day went fast - they caught over 500 lobsters. Heading back to the Harbor, the boat was cleaned and Ken lit up his 6th Pall Mall of the day. We tied up next to the "buy float" which is where the lobsters are counted, weighed and crated in plastic boxes of 90 lbs each. The boxes are then submerged in the water for a day or two to get rid of the bait odor in their white flesh. Capt. Mike and Ken then pull up the boxes from the previous day and load them on his truck. Capt. Mike delivers lobsters for the next few hours to his restaurant and market customers before returning home only to begin again the next day. Our family have know the Hutchings for over 20 years since we started vacationing on Maine.
